Handia – the traditional beer of Adivasis

Hello Chasers!

Today we will savor a popular tribal drink, Handia. It is an exotic drink which is a mixture of natural juices prepared by the tribal people with happy faces covered in decorative masks, worshipping the nature and singing the triumph of the traditional warriors in the jungles of Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states of India.

Handia is made from the combination of different herbs (collectively known as Ranu or Handi Dawai) found in the forest region of Chhotanagpur plateau. These herbs act as fermenting agents. They are mixed with boiled rice, left to ferment and are ready to knock your taste buds within a week.

Now, some minds must be mulling over as to why the name ‘Handia’?

It is because this beverage is fermented in clay pots which are natively known as Handi and thus the name ‘Handia’.

The most enthralling part about the drink is the tribal women who imbue it with the true essence of their culture, keeping traditional values alive even after miles of migration to different parts of India since the British rule.

Medicinal Value – It is good for curing ailments related to the digestive system. It’s also an effective remedy for Diarrhoea and Dysentery.
